BACKGROUND
Hikefinder was a start-up company that ran a search results site that retrieved maps of trails. They were scoping out the mobile app version of their site that had search results, tracking, picture inventory and review components. This was a freelance job I did for them and I worked as the primary designer along with a project manager and company leadership.
RESEARCH
Working with the company on this project, we started off with me getting to learn the company, their goals and the specific needs for this project. They wanted a mobile app that could allow users to search for trails and be able to add reviews and pictures detailing their experiences. As a big hiker myself I thought this was a cool project to work on and found user feedback easy to come in terms of finding how would a user find this useful. The company itself had already provided a lot of research that it passed on to me that I would use to start building out the designs.
WIREFRAMES
During my conversation with the company I began to put together some wireframes detailing the layout ideas I had some up with and the flow of some of features of the app. These wireframes plus some visuals concepts were approved and would be the foundation for the final design mocks.
MOCKUPS and FINAL DESIGN
After taking all of the feedback and wireframes I began to put together mocks for the mobile app that after a few alterations with company leadership, would be the final design. We took a lot of the imagery the company had in mind and some of the visual identity I had built out for them and used content for the layout we had made.
CONCLUSION
This was a cool and fun project that I greatly enjoyed working on as a freelance project and one that combined a personal interest of mine with a professional one. These designs were well liked by the client and felt personally proud of it as well. I think another iteration of it could have further fleshed out the design and usability. This project I felt had a lot of further potential not only as an app but for the company as a whole but for the scope of this, it fully met the goals of the project.
